Hannu Penttilä has served as Deputy Mayor of the City of Helsinki since 2008, in charge of City Planning and Real Estate. He was elected to office as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Finland.
Prior to his current office in the Helsinki City administration, Mr Penttilä served in various regional and national positions. He was Executive Director of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (2004-07), a joint body of the area municipalities mainly in charge of public transport and environmental services, and he held the same position at the development organization Regional Council of Häme (1998-2003). He was Chief Engineer at the Ministry of the Environment of Finland (1985-98) and Head of Office at the Finnish Association for Nature Protection (1979-85).
Mr Penttilä's positions of trust in Finland have included chairmanship of the City of Espoo Executive Board and other duties in the City administration of Espoo (one of the Helsinki metropolitan area municipalities) and in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. He has been President of the Finnish Housing Reform Association since 2006.
Among his many international positions of trust, Mr Penttilä has been President of the Network of European Metropolises and Regions (METREX) since 2009. He was President of the European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (EMTA) in 2007-09. He has served on the European Union Urban Expert Group (1993-98) and Committee of the Regions (1995-2002).
Mr Penttilä earned an M.S. (Tech.) degree at the Helsinki University of Technology in 1979.
