
The Vision
The World Smart Capital concept provides a platform and focus for cities to explore new urban ideas and solutions, to develop their skills and help them make positive choices for their citizens, while raising both the awareness and quality of urban development to a new sustainable level
The World Smart Capital Initiative is a non-profit organisation registered in Scotland No. SC414237.
The Objectives
The objectives of the World Smart Capital Initiative are:
- To promote innovative solutions and services to cities worldwide which are exploiting a host of creative and innovative ways to reduce energy consumption, water use, waste and emissions, while also being engines of culture, creativity and economic activity
- To identify and share successful urban innovations across cities worldwide and share best practices to maximize progress and minimize costs, while focussing on the application of ICT and smart systems in particular to further the economic and social development of the world's cities
- To increase awareness for and access to the modern sustainable solutions for cities both in the western world and the developing countries
- To educate city officials, managers and planners in urban development knowledge and to promote future governance structures of urban areas
- To help cities involve their citizens (urbanites) regarding urban development as part of a creative and practical collaboration
- To manage - with help from advisory committees representing corporations, cities, institutions and universities - the title of World Smart Capital and each year to formally designate a city for one calendar year. A city will be commissioned to be the pilot city to develop the World Smart Capital concept for the years 2012 and 2013
- To help the designated city identify and develop a Program consisting of projects and events, each ranging in scope and size, with specific objectives to address local, regional, national or international audiences, as well as public or private sectors
- To secure application fees from cities when applying for the World Smart Capital title and contributions from corporations, institutions, non governmental organisations and governmental bodies sufficient to cover all the costs envisaged in these objectives
